Max it out...

I finally purchased a maxi skirt at the weekend, which is a bit of a change from my usual choice of leggings or jeans (adventurous I know) but I thought it'd be nice to wear over tights for winter.

Excuse the crappy selfie mode photos from my room, but as yet I don't feel confident enough to ask someone to take photos of my outfits for me! haha.

Anyway this is how I wore it the other day, hope you like it!

October Playlist

Here is a list of a few things i've been listening to and enjoying in the last month...

Albums

Ellie Goulding - Halcyon Days
I've been a fan of Ellie's for a long time, in fact since 'Under the Sheets' was featured on BBC's Sound of 2010, and of course have had Halcyon in my collection since it was first released. However, since the success of Burn she has released an extended version of the album called Halcyon Days with eight extra tracks. These extra tracks are absolutely brilliant, Goodness Gracious is a great tune to have a little boogie to, while Hearts Without Chains and How Long Will I Love You are beautiful mellow songs if you're in the mood for something chilled and emotional.

London Grammar - If You Wait
I'd heard good things about London Grammar before I decided to buy their album; a lot of rave reviews from both critics and my friends and I wasn't disappointed. Hannah Reid's voice is one of those that you just never tire of listening to, and combined with the ethereal, melancholy accompaniment of her two bandmates creates an exceptionally chilled out yet powerful record. My favourite tracks have got to be Hey Now and Disclosure collaboration Help Me Lose My Mind.

Disclosure - Settle
Bit slow on the uptake here but upon realising I love seven out of 14 tracks on Settle I thought it was about time I buy the whole album. Brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence are a powerhouse likeable to Calvin Harris with their ability to produce track after track with infectious electronic hooks and catchy choruses. Aside from obvious chart hits like Latch, F For You and White Noise, yet to be released favourites include When a Fire Starts to Burn and Confess to Me featuring Jessie Ware.

And now a few singles...

Killers - Shot at the Night
Tirzah - I'm Not Dancing
Sub Focus & Kele - Turn It Around
Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball (guilty pleasure!)
Klangkarussell - Sonnentanz
Ben Pearce - What I Might Do
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Same Love
Ellie Goulding - Lights (Bassnectar Remix)
Ra Ra Riot - Beta Love

Autumn Style/Beauty Favourites

My blog has been a bit neglected for the past month or so since I've been back at Uni; partially due to the fact I've only just got wifi in my house and i've been a bit preoccupied by going out and shopping with my maintenance loan.

This does however mean I've got a fair bit to write about in terms of what I have purchased/will purchase style and beauty-wise for Autumn! So here we go...

Beauty

Maybelline Browdrama Sculpting Brow Mascara

I've been looking for an alternative to an eyebrow pencil for a while because I find they don't last very long and sharpening them pretty much every day is quite annoying. So when Maybelline brought this out I had to give it a go. I found it quite hard to get used to at first, but once I got the hang of applying it properly it's a really quick and effective way of doing your brows. It's lasted me much longer than a pencil and I think it was around the same price, if not only slightly more expensive.

Nail Paint by Barry M in Red Black (115)

As Autumn closes in I felt it was time to leave behind my beloved pastel brights from the summer and move towards darker colours, reminiscent of blackberries and such like growing around the place (very in touch with nature, me). Most of my nail colours are from Barry M so of course this was a natural choice; this colour is absolutely lovely after a couple of coats and i'm sure it makes my currently shorter nails look longer?! Could just be me but i'm happy...

Rimmel Stay Glossy Lip Gloss in Non-Stop Glamour (120)

When I bought this I was after a subtle lip gloss for every day wear; this colour is a pale pink with a slight sparkle that looks natural but gives my lips a much-needed shine. To top it all off it's nice and moisturising which is essential for my Vaseline-dependent lips!

Impulse Body Spray in Sweet Smile

I used to think Impulse spray was something you got in secondary school before you could afford decent perfume, but I gave this a try because I wanted something I could chuck in my handbag on the go without having to carry around my expensive perfume. I'm pleased to say this scent is actually really nice and so handy when i'm out. I think it was something like 80p as well, so an absolute barg.

Style

Topshop 'Mom' Jeans

These are my favourite style of jeans at the moment, despite the fact my mum keeps telling me she had a pair just like them when she was my age! They're really great to wear with chelsea boots and a tee tucked into them.

Chelsea Boots

A decent pair of boots are a must have as the colder weather draws in. I got a lovely slightly heeled pair from River Island that look great, but aren't the most comfortable, so once I get some more money, I'm going to get a flatter cut out pair i've had my eye on from Deichmann.

Shirts and Jumpers
Obviously this can be taken as wearing them separately, but I really like the combination of wearing a shirt underneath a cosy jumper with the collar coming through and the buttons all done up. A cute necklace also goes well with this as well as collar chains.

Midi/Maxi Skirts

Praise be for an Autumn trend that is both stylish and practical. Infinitely warmer than a mini skirt, these look really cool with a pair of heeled chelsea boots. But to avoid looking like you're going to work, dress it down with a baggy tee.

Slogan Tees

I'm a big fan of oversized black/white tees with a cool slogan on. Urban Outfitters are a pretty safe bet  for these and look great with pretty much everything

Beanie Hats

Shamefully i've kind of been looking forward to the weather getting a bit colder so it's acceptable for me to start wearing my beanie hat that I bought in August (don't ask why). They can be combined with pretty much everything, but I'll be wearing mine with a midi skirt, baggy tee and leather jacket with a dark red lipstick.

10 Worst People at Festivals

Most of us can agree that festivals by and large are well fun, but if you've been to one yourself you'll know that the experience of sharing a relatively small space with 60,000 other people can at times be rather challenging. Largely because people who you don't know can be really fucking annoying. After my second experience of Bestival this week, I compiled a list of 10 of the worst types of people you're forced to share oxygen with. Here they are:

1) Couples - I realise that not all couples are like this, but if you're unfortunate enough to end up with a particularly affectionate pair in front of you it can really hinder your experience of an otherwise enjoyable performance. Aside from the fact that an overzealous game of tonsil tennis right in front of you can be quite distracting, the fact that they constantly insist on being stood one in front of the other with arms wrapped around the waist whispering sweet nothings in each others ears is really annoying in a crowd; you've barely got room to breathe on your own, so resenting the lovebirds in their little bubble of sickening happiness is only reasonable.

2) The Alcohol Show Off - There's always one person bragging about how much alcohol they've got and/or drunk or how much it's going to take to get them drunk. Let me tell you, bragging about how you're going to need 'Two bottles of Rose, Jack Daniels, and Vodka' to get you 'absolutely wasted' as I overheard one girl telling her friend, makes you sound like an absolute bellend. No one needs that much, not unless you really want alcohol poisoning.

3) Posh girls - Yes, compared to a lot of people I may seem like one of the posh girls I'm talking about; however I would say I am well spoken, and the girls i'm talking about are the type to say 'so effing rah' and are only really slumming it in a tent just for the status of saying they've been to a festival. You're most likely to hear them complaining, probably about the tent, the cold, or attempting to take arty potential profile pictures on their £400 Canon looking like they're having a 'toadally fab time', and not actually going back to a seven-bedroom mansion in Surrey.

4) The Inconsiderate Early Riser - It's quite difficult to have a lie-in in a tent, mostly due to the sun coming in as it rises, which is pretty early during the summer months. Fair enough if you can't get back to sleep and pop off to get yourself a cup of tea, but it is beyond comprehension how some people (presumably over the age of 18), still feel it is acceptable to, in a 'let's wake mummy and daddy' up kind of fashion, seemingly go out of their way to wake everyone else up from their hungover slumber. One cretin in the tent next to mine thought it would make them friends by setting off a foghorn repeatedly at the crack of dawn, which, if there were a report of death at Bestival, was probably someone stabbing them with a tent peg for the good of humanity.

5) The Phantom Shitter - The portaloos are probably the worst thing about camping, everyone knows that, but everyone gets on with it and we all try and keep them in as good a condition as possible to make the experience as pleasant as possible, right? No, wrong apparently. By day two or three the toilets are an absolute state, often with feces inexplicably spread anywhere besides where it's supposed to go. If someone could tell me who actually manages to shit, presumably in their hands, and chooses to wipe it all over the walls I'd be quite interested to know. Actually no, I wouldn't.

6) People chains - It's easy to lose your pals in a crowd, and with limited phone use the best thing you can do is hold on to each other. Which is fine, let me be clear, I did it with my two other friends whilst weaving through people to get out of a crowd. The issue is when you choose to let a chain of people past you, which you assume is going to be a maximum of five people, turns out to be a mammoth chain of 10+, and by the time they've passed you you've basically missed a whole song. I don't really have an alternative if you're in a large group but it is nonetheless irritating.

7) Gazebo wankers - Unless you arrive at the festival site at 9am when it opens, finding a space to pitch your tent can be quite stressful, and you're inevitably going to end up shoulder to shoulder with your neighbours. So as you're dragging your tent, tired and angry, desperately searching for a space that isn't a 30 minute walk away, nothing screams 'Fuck you, i'm a selfish arsehole' than walking past a group of people taking up a tent-sized space with a fucking gazebo. No, you do not need it for when you're sat outside socialising, sit in your tent, or go and sit in the arena and watch some music like you've presumably come here for. I'm quite for the idea that gazebos at festivals should be banned actually.

8) Miss Oblivious-of-personal-space - I say Miss, not Mr, because let's be honest, it's usually girls that do this. You know when you're stood in a crowd and you're expectedly brushed by the people stood in close proximity with you, but you get that one girl who goes a bit too hard with throwing shapes and repeatedly elbows/shoulders/kicks you? That's Miss Oblivious-of-personal-space. It's hard to tell whether this girl is either stupid or just rude, but either way a stream of dirty looks on your own part is not enough to end her plight, let me tell you.

9) Girls on shoulders - Similar to Miss Oblivious, girls on the shoulders of men magically lose control of their lower limbs and end up kicking all those around them in the head. They also usually have a very high-pitched, annoying fan girl scream. I was unlucky enough to be stood next to one of these girls who, in the spirit of the nautical theme, was wearing a sizeable fish tail on her back end, which, when I wasn't being kicked by her Hunter wellies, was flapping around my face. Avoid at all costs where possible.

10) Parents with young children - If I'm honest, the likes of buggies, screeching young children and mothers that for some reason believe they have spacial priority are not my favourite things in a normal environment, let alone a festival. It's quite beyond me why people choose to take young children to festivals in the first place to be honest; they're too young to appreciate it anyway, but alas parents still do and if you're unlucky enough to pitch your tent next to a family with young children like I was last year, you'll be blessed with early morning wake up screeches of 'MUMMAAYYYY' and being told to move your tent because they won't be able to get past with their buggy. I rest my case, families this is not the place for you.

I realise most of these are girls, but unfortunately females happen to annoy me infinitely more than men do, but that is because girls are innately annoying. We just can't help it. I also apologise for swearing more than usual, I don't like to usually in blog posts but annoying people really set off my swearing bomb (sorry mum). Also, despite what it looks like, I had an absolutely incredible time at Bestival, i'd still hugely recommend it.

Bank Holiday Hair

Pretty self indulgent post but my hair fell quite nicely today without me really doing much to it.
I just put some dry shampoo and L'Oreal Studio Salt Spray et voila!

Fishtail Plait - How to

I'm really not intending on making videos a regular thing, but I've had a few people asking me how to do fishtail plaits, and videoing how to do it seemed a lot easier than trying to explain it through pictures and words. Sorry about the the editing and if i'm confusing, doing it in the mirror image was quite difficult! But I hope i've explained things well enough for you to find it useful.
If this doesn't work for you, there are some much better vids on youtube!

Outfit Of The Day

Wee bit bored on a Sunday afternoon (my parents are out at a festival while i'm stuck at home babysitting 6 dogs, how's that for role reversal), so thought i'd do a little OOTD. Nothing particularly special, but I really love this top with fringe detail on the back, a total barg from TK Maxx where I don't usually shop. Scarf was probably about £1 from Primark years ago, teamed with standard leggings and my bargain boots that I got from some Brick Lane cockney geezers. Had a couple of strangers ask me where I got my necklace, which is only New Look - proper alternative... Lipstick is Rimmel Kate Moss in 107.
Sorry for the lame pics, I don't own a decent camera with timed capture so Mac photobooth sufficed!

A Weekend around the Capital

A bit lost at London Bridge
I spent my weekend wandering around what felt like quite a lot of London; After going out on Friday night and spending most of Saturday hungover with my friend Ed in Watford, I made my way across to another pal Hannah who lives near Greenwich. A combination of part of the northern line being closed and my ineptitude with anything that involves a sense of direction got me a bit lost, but central London does look quite pretty at night time and it was actually quite funny working out where to go. I eventually got there (despite going too far on the 422 bus), and on Sunday Hannah took me up to Shoreditch for cocktails and shopping.
Cocktails at the Drunken Monkey

We went first to a bar called the Drunken Monkey, which does half price cocktails all day Sunday and were some of the nicest i've ever had. If you ever go, i'd recommend the Strawberry Lemonade and Pigeon Rumba.

Next we walked over to Brick Lane, and like tru indie galZ we hit all the vintage shops and markets. It's an absolute treasure trove for good vintage garments and one off pieces; I find the disorder of some vintage stores quite annoying and I lose patience with finding the hidden gems (I also find some of it rather overpriced...) but a couple of places were really reasonable and I managed to pick up a great floral print shirt for £5! Hannah also got a couple of great shirts from an underground vintage market which I think were no more than £15 each.

Slightly pokey changing 'room' in the underground market
I also picked up some desert boots, which i've been after for a while. These were real suede and only £19, only made better by the fact they were sold to me by three hilarious cockney geezers, one of whom told me my shirt did nothing for me because it detracted from my 'piercing blue eyes' - apprentice worthy sales charm!

And finally, probably the funniest thing I saw all weekend (apart from a drunk woman in Watford who was talking to her flip flop...) - won't be stealing from Brick Lane market stalls!!

Perhaps a bit extreme...

Holi Festival of Colours London

Last weekend (11/8/13) three friends and I went to Holi Festival of Colours at Battersea Power Station in London. None of us had ever been before but all went to Bestival together last summer, so thought we'd do something a bit different as Mel and Ewan (the lovely couple to the right of me in the above pic) can't come to Bestival again this year :-(

The idea of the festival is based around the Hindu religious festival of Holi, everyone comes in white clothing, then every hour throughout the day you throw coloured powder in the air and get absolutely covered in it. There were also some great DJs to have a little boogie to and it was so much fun! I'd definitely recommend it if you like getting a bit messy, but bring plenty of money, it was quite an expensive day out...

I brought a disposable camera with me but my photography skills were held back a bit by excessive cider consumption, so I've used some of the ones that Ewan took. Ewan's a bit of a pro at taking pictures and has just graduated from Newport Uni with a degree in Photography for Fashion and Advertising. Check out his blog here http://this2.tumblr.com

Things I'm loving

Here are a few general fashion/beauty things i've been into recently...

Midi ring - Urban Outfitters, Blue Aztec ring - Claire's Accessories, Hearts ring - River Island
1. Rings - I've not always been a massive jewellery person. I definitely go through phases of wearing them, especially when i'm regularly doing sport I tend not to bother with the hassle of taking them all off. But with the summer upon us and sports season over for now, I thought i'd try my hand (har har) at wearing some rings. I really love the look of midi rings at the moment; they take a bit of getting used to at first but look really cute with a more colourful normal ring below them!

My battered old Nike Blazers... I think I got these from Office?

2. Trainers - I'm absolutely obsessed with wearing trainers at the moment. To be honest, if I have the choice of wearing them as opposed to heels on a night out I'll choose trainers every time, because they're just so comfy and I am completely over the pain of wearing 4 inchers! (Think i'm getting old). I have a gorgeous pair of hot pink Nike Blazers that I've worn to death, also a pair of blue vans that pretty much go with anything. I have my eye on a pair of amazing Nike Pre Montreals at the moment... watch this space.

Earrings - Topshop/Claire's Accessories (Ears look odd up close!)

3. Mismatched earrings - Why be limited to matching earrings in each ear eh? I think wearing different ones is really fun, i've also managed to put a dangly earring through the same hole with a stud already in...!

Body butter - Boots

4. Soap & Glory 'The Daily Smooth' body butter - this was a godsend after overdoing it a bit in the sun on holiday (whoops) and I have almost run out. It's not particularly cheap but it smells absolutely divine and has lasted me quite a long time.

My perfect foundation... - No7 at Boots
5. No7 Stay Perfect foundation - so after months of my mother telling me my foundation was either too dark or that I looked orange I decided to go to boots and get the strange cyber scanner put on my face and find out what colour foundation I should actually have (as much as it pains me to admit). Needless to say I was 'prescribed' a much lighter tone which actually matches my skin perfectly possibly for the first time in my life. It's really light and goes on very evenly, lasts a long time and has even got an SPF 15 in it which is an added bonus. Would definitely recommend giving No7 a whirl.

Cringey first blog post...

I'm Polly. I am (yet another) aspiring journalist/publisher just about to enter my third year at Cardiff University studying Music.

I thought it was probably about time I started a little blog so I can stop being so opinionated on Twitter (@PollyVBartlett if you're interested) and write it all on here. Maybe bit of writing practice while i'm at it? Who knows.

I'm unsure as to whether this will be directed at one area in particular, but going on what i'm passionate about it will probably be a mish mash of fashion, beauty, and popular/classical music.

I hope you enjoy what I write about :)
